Our Facilities at The Badger Sett

The Badger Sett is a lovely 200 year old barn with modern single storey extensions to either side and is our home from home. We use it ourselves as often as we can (with our two children and very well behaved dog). In between times we invite you to come and enjoy it too. We want to make you feel at home and aim to provide the highest quality of facilities, fittings and service. Since buying The Badger Sett in late 2010 we’ve completely remodeled and refurbished the cottage to make it in to the comfortable, spacious and extremely relaxing place that it is today.

Dining and living room

The dining room and living room are part of the same L-shaped space and are situated in one of the two modern extensions to the house. The room has solid oak floors and a beautiful northerly aspect, with glorious views across the valley. Sliding glass doors open on to the patio and provide a wonderful way of bringing the outside in on warm summer evenings. The dining area has a large walnut dining table comfortably seating 6 people. The living area has flexible seating with one arm chair and two sofas, each seating three people. There is a 42″ colour television with freeview, dvd player, surround sound audio system and an extensive collection of dvds, board games, books and local maps.

Bedrooms

There are three large bedrooms, two with king size beds and one with two single divans (which can be zipped together to form a super-king).

The Garden Bedroom is the largest of the three and is in the old barn. It’s a room full of character with exposed beams, a beautiful stone wall to one end and a very efficient woodburning stove in the fireplace for those cold winter evenings. From the solid oak king size bed you can lie in bed, relax and look out on to the garden through the floor to ceiling glass sliding doors. There is a 23″ television with built in DVD player.

The Swallows Bedroom is a large room in one of the modern extensions and has a sumptuous king size bed. The room has lovely views across the surrounding fields and just in case you’re wondering why we call it the Swallows Bedroom it’s because of the wallpaper from Sanderson’s vintage range which features a beautiful 1930’s design of swallows.

The Squirrels Bedroom is the smallest of the three bedrooms but at 4.2 x 3.5m it is still very spacious. It has two single divans and shares the same lovely views as the Swallows Bedroom. Like the Swallows, it too is named after the wallpaper – a C F A Voysey design of squirrels and doves.

Kitchen

Our bespoke fitted kitchen is in the oldest part of the house and features exposed beams with a slate tiled floor and windows overlooking both the garden and the fields at the rear. Its the perfect space in which to cook after a long walk on the fells. Facilities include induction hob, multi-function eye level oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, fridge, freezer and washer/dryer.

Bathrooms

When you come home from a long day’s walk or ride there’s nothing better than relaxing in a steaming hot bath or taking the aches and pains away with a powerful shower. We think that quality washroom facilities are very important when you go away on holiday and that’s why we’ve invested in making both our large bathroom and shower room lovely spaces in which to unwind. Black brazilian slate features heavily in both rooms and there’s a range of lighting options so that you can set the mood. Both the bathroom and the shower room have washbasins and w/cs.

Outside

The Badger Sett is set in enclosed and safe gardens and is approached via a gated driveway from a very quiet country lane. There’s a large patio area to the front of the house with table and seating for six people (and lovely views), as well as a BBQ for outdoor dining. Children (and adults) love the hammock which we hang between two trees at the bottom of the garden and the lawn is a nice size for an impromptu game of cricket or football.

Nearby

The lovely village of Hesket Newmarket is just a one mile stroll along a very peaceful country lane. It boasts a village shop with adjoining tea-room, a superb pub and an idyllically located children’s playground. Andy and Liz run the shop and are very helpful (Andy also maintains our garden!). The shop is open Monday to Saturday and can provide provision boxes on request – telephone 016974 78229. The Old Crown is famous for being Britain’s first cooperatively owned pub. It is everything the perfect pub should be – log fires, snugs and great beer! Talking of which… the beer is provided by an on-site micro-brewery. The children’s play area (just across the green from the pub) is small but perfectly formed with beautiful views across the valley.

Facilities for families

The Badger Sett is a wonderful place for a family holiday. We have a selection of toys and books for younger children and a wide range of dvds and board games for children of all ages. We also have a Wii games console with a selection of games. The house is very safe for toddlers with no steps or stairways and the enclosed safe garden is a great area in which to play out. We provide a cot, highchair, baby monitor and night-lights for families with babies. Children of all ages love the friendly and inquisitive bullocks in the neighbouring field and the free wi-fi is very popular with facebook addicts! Take a look at our ‘Things to Do For Children’ to see some of the many child-friendly activities in the area.

Facilities for cyclists

We actively welcome cyclists. Outside there is a lockable store and a tap for washing muddy bikes. We provide a track pump (with schrader and presta valve adaptor) and a basic tool and puncture repair kit, though we advise you to bring your own tools to suit your particular bike. Inside you’ll find a selection of mountain bike books and magazines – sorry nothing for the ‘roadie’ yet! Check out the ‘Things To Do Outdoors’ page for details of nearby trails and trail centres.

Facilities for dogs

There is arguably no better place to go on holiday with your dog than the Lake District and nearby Keswick was recently voted Britain’s most dog-friendly town. As dog owners ourselves we welcome well behaved dogs at The Badger Sett. We provide dog bowls, a basket (bring your own dog blanket) and complimentary ‘poop’ bags. The garden is enclosed so your dog can roam free but please make sure you clean up afterwards. We do ask that you don’t allow your dogs on the furniture or in the bedrooms and charge £25 per week per dog to cover additional cleaning costs.

Layout and accessibility

The Badger Sett is all on one level with step-free access between rooms (apart from a small step to the front door) and is therefore ideal for people with mobility problems. For more information please download our Access Statement.
